Cape Porcupine

Our porcupines live alongside our meerkats and their diet is predominantly a wide variety of vegetables. Porcupines are monogamous animals and live in extended family groups consisting of an adult male and female and their offspring.

They generally forage alone, but a pair may be found searching for food along with their offspring. There is sexual dimorphism in the species, as females are larger than the males. Unlike other rodents, a porcupine’s life expectancy is from 15 to 20 years. The porcupine’s armament of spines and quills acts as a significant deterrent to most predators and although they do occasionally come under attack from lions and leopards, they are generally able to fend off any fatal encounters.
